Why use a kissing gate

The idea behind the kissing gate is to allow pedestrians to pass in and out of the space with relative ease, but effectively prevent livestock passing through the same gate. This is achieved by a swing action that makes it possible to have the gate closed to one side while open to the other.

The gate can swing and "kiss" either side, but never fully open. The idea being that the U is too small for sheep and they cannot pull gates, only push.

Kissing gates are found on many foot paths in the UK and are manufactured in both timber and galvanised steel.
