Pegasus School
Birmingham
Project overview
Secure-a-Field was appointed to upgrade the perimeter and entrance security at Pegasus School on Turnhouse Road, Birmingham.
The project involved replacing the existing fencing, installing new vehicle and pedestrian gates, and introducing a modern access-control system.
Location: Pegasus School, 69 Turnhouse Road, Birmingham
Project date: July 2026
Sector: Education
Services: Security fencing, automated gates and controlled pedestrian access
The challenge
The existing boundary and entrance arrangement needed to be replaced with a more secure and reliable system.
As well as strengthening the school perimeter, the new installation had to manage both vehicles and pedestrians safely. This meant bringing together several elements: approx100 metres of fencing, an automated sliding gate, a self-closing pedestrian gate and electronic entry control.
The groundworks also required careful planning. New foundations, trenches and underground ducting were needed for the gate infrastructure, power supply and data cabling.
The solution
Secure-a-Field removed the existing fence before installing approximately 93 metres of 1.8-metre-high, self-raking bow-top fencing.
The system was built using 60mm circular hollow-section posts, positioned at 2,565mm centres, with 25.4mm bow-top infill. The design is RoSPA compliant and includes adjustable angle joints, galvanised bolts and security shear nuts. This provides a robust boundary while maintaining the softer appearance often preferred for schools.
A matching automated sliding vehicle gate was installed at the main entrance. Measuring six metres wide and 1.8 metres high, it allows vehicles to enter and leave the site without compromising the perimeter.
Pedestrian access was handled through a matching 1.2-metre-wide semi-automatic gate. A self-closing hydraulic hinge helps prevent the entrance from being left open, while the built-in maglock provides controlled and dependable security.
To manage entry, the team installed a Paxton Net2 access-control unit, together with a push-to-exit button for safe and straightforward egress.
Coordinated groundworks
Before the fencing and gate systems could be fitted, the site was prepared with new trenches, ducting and concrete foundations.
Separate routes were created for power and data cables, laid at a minimum depth of 500mm. Trenches were backfilled with pea gravel, sand and hazard-warning tape, while new foundation pads and concrete edging provided a stable base for the finished installation.
Disturbed areas were completed with compacted stone and tarmac, with joints sealed to give the work a neat, durable finish.
The result
Pegasus School now has a coordinated perimeter-security system designed around the practical demands of the site.
The new bow-top fencing creates a strong and visually appropriate boundary, while separate vehicle and pedestrian gates provide clearer control over movement onto the premises. Automated operation, self-closing hardware and Paxton access control work together to make entry more secure without making day-to-day access unnecessarily complicated.
By managing the fencing, gates and access-control elements as one joined-up installation, Secure-a-Field delivered an entrance that is safer, smarter and built for long-term use.
